Honor has officially begun local smartphone production in Bangladesh with the inauguration of a new manufacturing facility at the Hi Tech Park in Kaliakair, Gazipur. Opened on December 2 in partnership with Smart Technologies, the plant marks Honor’s first step into local device assembly as it aims to strengthen its position in one of South Asia’s fastest growing smartphone markets.

The company said all devices assembled at the facility will carry a Made in Bangladesh label. The factory currently operates one production line capable of producing 1,500 units of the Honor X6c each day. Honor plans to expand this capacity to four production lines within 2026, integrating its global AI driven manufacturing systems with local capabilities.

Speaking at the ceremony, Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser for the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology, highlighted that Bangladesh still lags behind neighbouring countries like India and Pakistan in smartphone penetration. He said local production initiatives may help increase national penetration to 70 percent in the coming years, compared to the current rate of around 40 to 45 percent. He also stressed that the government is working to ensure policy consistency, protect investor confidence and introduce a new ordinance for high tech parks.

In a presentation, Abdullah Al Mamun, Head of Business at Smart Technologies, said the Honor factory currently employs 254 skilled workers, with further expansion planned. He also announced the upcoming Honor Academy, an initiative to transfer technical knowledge to college and university students and train more than 500 Honor certified professionals in smartphone manufacturing.

Honor said the new facility will support technology transfer, reduce dependency on imported devices and help position Bangladesh as an emerging player in the global electronics supply chain. Smart Technologies Managing Director Mohammad Zahirul Islam added that the factory’s initial monthly production capacity is 60,000 units, with the ability to scale as market demand increases.

Honor entered the Bangladesh market in late 2023 and currently holds around 3 percent of the country’s smartphone market. Company executives expect this share to grow to 10 percent by next year.
