What began as a small technology venture with limited resources has grown into one of Bangladesh’s fastest expanding tech groups. Bdcalling IT started its journey in 2017 with an initial investment of Tk 500,000 and a team of just seven employees. Eight years later, that modest beginning has evolved into the Betopia Group, a diversified technology conglomerate comprising 22 companies and employing nearly 4,000 people.
The company that once operated on half a million taka now pays around Tk 80 million every month in employee salaries alone. This growth reflects not only scale but also a steady transition from a service focused startup into a multi sector technology group with global reach. The Betopia Group is led by its founder and chief executive officer Muhammad Monir Hossain, who built the organisation entirely from the ground up.

Monir Hossain’s entrepreneurial path began earlier, in 2013, when he worked independently on international freelancing platforms such as oDesk and Elance. As client demand increased, he formalised his work by establishing Bdcalling IT. In its early phase, the company focused on web design and development, mobile app development, creative and visual services, data entry, and digital marketing. Over time, these offerings expanded to include artificial intelligence, cloud solutions, and data centre services under the Betopia Group umbrella.
The group has also diversified beyond core IT services. Investments now include renewable energy, electrical equipment, supply chain services, and infrastructure development. Betopia provides end to end technology solutions for sectors such as fintech, healthcare, energy, and infrastructure, reflecting a strategy built around long term scalability rather than short term freelancing income.
Today, Betopia Group operates in 78 countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, Brazil, and the Philippines. However, around 80 to 90 percent of its total business comes from the United States, making it the group’s most critical market. This international exposure has helped the company withstand local market volatility and build stable foreign currency earnings.
Financial growth has been equally striking. Two years ago, in December 2023, Bdcalling IT employed about 400 people and earned roughly Tk 25 million per month, equivalent to Tk 300 million annually. In just two years, the workforce increased by nearly 900 percent, while revenue rose almost sevenfold. In the last financial year, the combined annual revenue of all Betopia Group companies reached approximately Tk 2 billion.
Total investment in the group so far stands at Tk 450 million, of which Tk 30 million came from bank loans and Tk 420 million was financed internally. During the last fiscal year, the group also contributed about Tk 2.5 million in government revenue, highlighting its growing role in the formal economy.
A major focus area for Betopia is artificial intelligence and emerging technologies. The group has begun setting up an AI based data centre equipped with high performance GPU infrastructure to support AI and machine learning operations. It has also established its own data centre in Bangladesh, allowing it to serve local organisations at lower cost through in house facilities.

According to Monir Hossain, the global freelancing market is valued between USD 60 and 80 billion, while the AI and cloud services market is moving toward the trillion dollar range. He believes Bangladeshi companies can capture a larger share of this opportunity if policy support improves, particularly through reduced import duties on AI hardware such as GPUs.
Despite its success, Betopia continues to face challenges common to the country’s technology sector. These include high internet bandwidth costs, unreliable electricity supply, shortages of skilled engineers, and weak national branding as an IT and software hub. Monir Hossain argues that long term employment and sustainable growth will come not from individual freelancing alone, but from building strong local companies that serve international markets directly.
The story of Bdcalling IT and the Betopia Group highlights how small beginnings, when paired with vision, skilled manpower, and global market access, can turn into large scale enterprises capable of generating employment, foreign income, and technological capability for Bangladesh.
