Bangladesh and Malaysia have signed five Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) and exchanged three notes to expand cooperation across multiple sectors, marking a significant step in strengthening bilateral relations. The agreements were witnessed by Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in Putrajaya, Malaysia’s administrative capital.

The three notes exchanged focused on higher education, diplomatic training, and the halal ecosystem. The higher education note was exchanged between Malaysian Foreign Minister Utama Haji Mohamad bin Haji Hasan and Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain, while the diplomatic training note was also signed by the same representatives. The halal ecosystem note was exchanged between Senator Dr Zulkifli bin Hasan, Deputy Minister in the Malaysian Prime Minister’s Department, and Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) Executive Chairman Chowdhury Ashik Mahmud bin Harun.

Among the five MoUs, the first was a defence cooperation agreement signed by Malaysian Defence Minister Mohamed Khaled bin Nordin and Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain. The second focused on cooperation in liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply, LNG infrastructure, and petroleum product infrastructure, signed by Malaysian acting economic minister Amir Hamzah bin Azizan and Bangladesh’s Energy Adviser M Fouzul Kabir Khan. The third MoU formalised collaboration between the Institute of Strategic and International Studies Malaysia (ISIS) and the Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS).

The remaining two MoUs were aimed at strengthening business ties. One was signed between MIMOS Services Sdn Bhd and the Bangladesh-Malaysia Chamber of Commerce & Industry (BMCCI), and the other between the National Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (NCCIM) and the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI). These agreements are expected to boost trade, investment, knowledge exchange, and strategic collaboration between the two countries.
