During the fiscal year 2022-23, the Minister of Textile and Jute, Jahangir Kabir Nanak, revealed that approximately 84.58% of the country’s total export earnings were generated from textile exports, according to data provided by the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB). He mentioned that the textile sector is pivotal in addressing the shortage of textile technologists in both domestic and international markets, with over 5000 experts graduating annually.

When lawmaker Amatul Kibria Keya Chowdhury asked a question in a meeting led by Speaker Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury at the Jatiya Sangsad, the minister talked about how the textile department is training people for jobs and producing skilled manpower for the textile industry. He said that in textile engineering colleges, you can get a BSC degree, in textile institutes, you can get a diploma, and a vocational institute offers a course in SSC (vocational) textile to help people get into the textile sector.

In addition to the significant revenue from textile exports, the minister pointed out that the jute sector contributed $912.25 million to the country’s earnings in the 2022-23 fiscal year. Emphasizing the importance of the jute sector in overall economic development, he disclosed a target of earning US$1020 million from jute exports in the current fiscal year 2023-24.
